Interview: XIRROSSIX (Argentina)

XIRROSSIX is an old Heavy/Thrash Metal band formed back in 1989, in Pico Truncado - Argentina. The band is basically inactive these days but recently they released a cassette-tape “Demo: Autista - 30 Aniversario”, an essential demo that was originally recorded in 1992. The 2022 reedition of “Autista” released by 1989 Desde Pico Truncado Ediciones also includes extra/additional tracks, consisting of unreleased track, Demo 1991 and some rehearsal & live recordings. Here we have a Q&A session with the vocalist/guitarist, Manuel Purulla, also known as Manu de Extremos. - Interview by Atandistorted [June 3, 2023]

1: Hola Manuel. Does Xirrossix still exist & still active? Tell us about the band’s history and lineup members?
Hello Atandistorted, the Xirrossix band is not currently active… In the year 2012 there was a meeting and we did some shows… Personally, in this last time, and… before also, I dedicated me to spreading that sound, that own style, to keep its history alive… Xirrossix was born in the mid-1989 in the city of Pico Truncado, Patagonia, Argentina. After the departure of some of the members, the most known line-up was established, Cristian on drums, Manuel on rhythm guitar and voice, Nestor on bass, and July on first guitar, with which we gained a heavy metal/thrash sound…

2: What is your definition on the music style of Xirrossix? Who are your influences?
At that time, it was not easy access to music, because of the distance to the big capital, where you achieved more or less what you wanted… Somewhere something arrived… Each one of us, on your side, had your preference… Nuclear Assault, V8, Cro Mags, Bad Brains, Sepultura, Ratos de Porão… among others, they sounded in the rehearsal room…

3: What has Xirrossix recorded and released so far?
In 1992, we recorded “Autista” at home in our city. And “En vivo”, live record of a show that same year (demo tape format). In 1993, in a studio in the city of Caleta Olivia, we recorded the independent production “Latinoamérica”, four tracks in pro tape format. Closer to this time, in 2018 the label “Alkolik Holocaust Records” edited “Tren de la Sombra Interior” Demos y Grabaciones Inéditas 1989/1993 in CD pro format. “Latinoamérica reedición 2020” was the first production on cassette from the label “1989 Desde Pico Truncado Ediciones”. “Descontrola Calavera - reunion 2012” is a live record in CD format, published in 2021 by the labels “Tornado de Almas Records” and “1989 Desde Pico Truncado Ediciones”. For commemorative occasion, in 2023, also for “1989 Desde…”, the demo was edited: “Autista 30 Anniversario”, on cassette.

4: Tell us more about the special re-issue tape “Demo: AUTISTA - 30 Aniversario”?
The demo “Autista” in 1992 was one of the first with this sound, which was recorded in the area. And with the conviction of making that initiatic movement known, I also compiled some live rehearsal recordings and an unfinished demo (prior to “Autista”), all of this, included as a bonus track. Keeping the original cover art, work by Nestor, in 1992.

5: What subjects were written in the lyrics?
The lyrics basically talk about personal experiences, the view of the world, of that moment… What it meaned to be young in our little city… Life, Death…

6: Please introduce us more about the label, 1989 Desde Pico Truncado - Ediciones?
“1989 Desde…” is my label, created in June 2020, with the purpose of publishing in physical format, archive material from Xirrossix and Extremos Niveles de Conciencia (E.N.C. hc-punk trio, in which I participate)… Today it is also a distro.

7: Where has Xirrossix ever played gigs and tours?
Our tour was small, in some way, even though the distances are great here… Cities like Las Heras, Comodoro Rivadavia, Caleta Olivia… Rada Tilly, and logically Pico Truncado… Always with bands from the area, we also played with Escabios, Sadistic Kill and the Spanish band Baron Rojo.

8: Thank you Manu. Say something to end our brief interview?
First, thank you very much for this interview, where I was able to tell my incursion into music, my activity. Congratulations for supporting the bands. I invite you… on Youtube and Bandcamp you can find Xirrossix… A big hug from Patagonia!!!

Review: WINTERCOLD - As Above as Below

WINTERCOLD (Sweden) - “As Above as Below” Full-length 2021
This band is not a new name. Wintercold has issued numberless releases in the 15 years of its existence (you can check their data of discography at Encyclopaedia Metallum). It’s just that for me they are a bit low-profile, more into do-it-yourself ethics and positioned in the depths of the Swedish underground. “As Above as Below” is one of the most recent, a full-length containing 12 tracks that was released on August 4th, 2021. Throughout approximately 37 minutes of total playing time is wisely-interpreted Black/Doom Metal; epic, artistic, well-executed compositions. The gloomy and atmospheric nuances are precisely pleasant. The empowerment of pagan/neofolk/ambient elements in the structures and arrangements of their songs (referring to this “As Above as Below” album) has made them an awe-inspiring, breath-taking and undoubtedly worth-checking band. Wintercold stands in a class of its own!

Review: V.A. - Azores & Metal Vol #2

V.A. - Azores & Metal Vol #2 (Compilation 2022)
“You may not believe in Azorean Heavy Metal, but it exists!”. Portugal’s Ponta Delgada-based label Museu do Heavy Metal Açoriano is back with its second volume of Azores & Metal compilation series, assembling some more 17 most active bands from the islands. Just like Vol.#1 that I checked in Reveal #14, I was once again fascinated and even more stunned by the quality of each band appeared in this Vol.#2. Each of them has given the best in terms of sound production, ideas that are rich in variety and full of color, song compositions in high creativity beyond limitations, a few of them are smart and brave to inject some non-metal elements, modern characteristics and other surprisingly unexpected features. Azores & Metal compilation is solid proof that there is a worthwhile metal scene in that Portuguese archipelago, and it’s like an ever-rolling ocean wave!
