Review: MELATA - The Assent

MELATA - The Assent (Re-issued EP 2021)
The original 5-tracks EP “The Assent” was released in September/November 2020; on Cassette-Tape by Skullism Records (Bali, Indonesia) and on CD-R by Black Mystic Production (Brunei). Now, it was re-released on Pro-CD by Sadist Records (Denpasar, Indonesia) launched on June 6, 2021 with additional 2 extra tracks and new coverart by Jenglot Hitam Artwork. Based in Surakarta, Indonesia’s MELATA is musically Black Metal. Soundwise, it’s raw and heavy but not kind of outrageous. All instruments still sound clearly and equally balanced. The structures of their songs emphasize slow- and mid-tempo, interspersed aggressively through fast-paced riffs and furious beats. In my opinion, Melata incorporates 90s Norwegian/Scandinavian Black Metal essences (e.g. Burzum and Darkthrone) with the Archipelagic nuances, as I heard something like the old As-Sahar (Singapore). Of all, “The Assent” is dark, doom-laden and evil!
