Interview: CHRIS REIERSON (USA)

Hello Chris Reierson. Please introduce yourself?
Greetings! I’m just another dude who does noise. I live in Wisconsin, USA, and I’ve been making experimental music under various names since 2007.

Could you please describe your music / sound genres?
Generally I stay in the realms of noise and ambient, but I’ve tried a bit of everything at some point: plunderphonics, power electronics, noisecore, HNW, spoken word, field recordings, even some hip-hop... basically anything that doesn’t strictly require traditional musical skill, I’ve done it. Recently I’ve been trying to sharpen my harsh noise sound with an emphasis on circuit bent gear, though with my first album, Insomniacs Anonymous (under the name MLF aka MY LOVELY FIGMENT), I went for an extremely ambient sound.

What inspired you during the track composing process?
It depends on the album. I get inspired by many different things, as I’m sure others do.

List us some essential releases from Chris Reierson?
It’s not uncommon for me to change up styles between albums, so it depends on what you’re looking for. For example, Sensitive to Textures is by far the album I’ve put the most effort into, however I acknowledge it’s a deeply flawed experience and it’s not for everyone. I’d say for people into ambient, listen to that album or Ha Det; for people into harsh noise, listen to the last half of Mouthful of Grapes; for people into tape loops, try Airtractor (Gracious Host label); etc.

Explain further about latest album “Mouthful of Grapes”?
I’ve already explained the origins of each track in the liner notes, so I’ll be going over more general details here.

Honestly, Mouthful just sort of happened. I  was preparing material for a different project and during that time I gradually accumulated four long tracks I liked, tracks that would’ve otherwise gone unused for the project I was then working on. Despite being vastly different in tone and recorded at different times, they somehow came together in a single, synchronous package.

If there was any point or “message” behind Mouthful, it’d be synchronicity. I have this text file I keep on my computer of ideas for track titles, usually just weird stuff I’d hear while working or whatever. I’ve kept this file updated for years. Meanwhile, when I was playing around with the art for Mouthful, I found that I liked the contrast between the graphite grey drawings and their magenta copies. Without even knowing it, I’d made a thematic connection between the art and the title of the first track, Eyes Bled Magenta. This wasn’t intentional: I’d written down “eyes bled magenta” as a potential track title years before working on Mouthful, and by pure coincidence I just happened to be working on cover art that had a strong magenta motif. That’s not even saying anything about how the next track, Bespoke Native Retina, introduced yet another unintended motif, this time with eyes.

Speaking of the cover art, it’s this crappy drawing I did in middle school called Mouthful of Grapes, from which the album gets its title. It was part of some school assignment where we were given a phrase and asked to draw our interpretation of what we thought it meant. From my research, I can’t find any evidence that “mouthful of grapes” was ever a common saying or idiom, nor what it could’ve possibly meant. But to me at least, it does sound like something someone might have said about who knows what. I think it’s kind of funny, that there’s this supposed proverb that doesn’t really mean anything yet sounds familiar when you say it. I guess in regard to the album, I don’t really know why I called it that other than being what the drawing was called. It just seemed fitting in its own way.

What themes / messages usually expressed through your compositions?
I tend to stay away from promoting any sort of message or worldview in my art, though there are exceptions. Sensitive to Textures was me coming to terms with my autism; Ha Det was about saying goodbye to old habits; Insomniacs Anonymous was an approximation of sounds I heard while struggling to go to sleep; etc. Generally, however, I do what I do simply because I like to do it.

How do you see the market / distribution for the type of music you play?
It’s challenging. I struggle a lot with promoting my music, not only getting people to hear it but to be interested in it enough to buy a physical copy. Noise really isn’t something you get into for the money, but thankfully the community is there to support you in any way they can. I’ve ruminated a lot about the noise market in the past; just look up the NoiseWiki forums and you should have little difficulty  in locating my thoughts on that subject.

Thanks. Say something for the last?
I’ve got some really harsh material coming up on NoiseWiki under the name DIODE SNORTER, so keep an eye out for that. I’m also planning on putting out a silly HNW side project in the very near future. And then there’s the occasional digital reissue or remastering of old works posted on my Facebook (facebook.com/chris.reierson.7). I try to post something every Friday. Thanks for the interview! -CR

Review: MORTIFY - Stench Of Swedish Buzzsaw

MORTIFY - Stench Of Swedish Buzzsaw (CD 2019)
Mortify is a Grindcore band consists of Koreeda (ex-Coffins/Trikorona) on guitar, Ryohei (Final Exit) on drums and Adam (Disrotted) on vocals. The album which released by Obliteration Records (Japan) is sort of rough, aggressive and obscure Grindcore, enriched with hellish heaviness of HM-2 Swedish Death Metal flavor. There are 21 tracks of skull-cracking assault; savage roars, buzzing guitar sound, and crazy blast-beats. Everything has top-notch quality and it’s truthfully an amazing debut full-length from this Tokyo-based band.

Review: DEPOPULATION DEPARTMENT - Life Kills

DEPOPULATION DEPARTMENT - Life Kills (CD 2019)
This band was formed by members of Spanish huge acts; Avulsed, Haemorrhage, and Ultimo Gobierno. “Life Kills” is their debut 7-song EP released in 2019 by Italian Spikerot Records. What we have here are doses of weighty and full-speed Crust-Punk anthems, thrashing mad straight-away from Hell. Yeah, you’ll be violently tormented by their crusty yet metallic fast-paced riffworks, fabulous d-beat blastings and get shocked with both tremendous male and female shouting-loud vocals. Fans of 80’s classics such as The Exploited, GBH, Discharge, ENT and the likes will certainly dig this, but much than that, DxDx infused more ideas and colours in their compositions. “Life Kills” is definitely a MUST. Excellent without any doubt!

Review: VRYKOLAKAS - Unleashing Vrykolakas Upon Mankind

VRYKOLAKAS - Unleashing Vrykolakas Upon Mankind (Tape 2011)
I thought this the second full-length from this Singapore’s Vrykolakas, but available only in cassette-tape format released through Chilean record label, Atomik Nuclear Desolation Productions (2011) . Debut full studio album was “Spawned from Hellfire and Brimstone” CD 2004 (released under Vrykoblast Productions). Well, “Unleashing Vrykolakas Upon Mankind” delivers 8 tracks; 4 songs each side. They’re musically Brutal old-school Death Metal; fucking heavy in sound, unrelenting fast and dark guitar-riffs, merciless blast-beats with intensely mind-blowing growl vocals. Greatly inspired by American and European old Death Metal of 90’s, Vrykolakas reminds me alot of bands like Suffocation, Immolation and Incantation. All in all, this is an album considerable ‘masterpiece’.

Review: HELL HORDES - Reckoning of Chaos and Beyond

HELL HORDES - Reckoning of Chaos and Beyond (Single 2020)
This is skullfucked thrashing old-school Death Metal, hammering straight-in-your face with no compromise! Hell Hordes (which is interviewed in this issue) is a solo-project created during lockdown by Vasuchandran, the guitarist/vocalist of India’s Thrash Metal warriors Amorphia. The 5-minute track sounds truly outstanding; a song that brings back the magnificence of late 80’s / early 90’s Death Metal such as Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation, Cancer, Benediction, Deicide… just to name a few. There are malicious riffs, insane guitar solos, pounding blasts, forceful vocals; everything wrapped up in a solid recording quality. Killer stuff indeed and it’s for those who worship pure death/thrash madness, absolutely!

Interview: DEPOPULATION DEPARTMENT (Spain)

DEPOPULATION DEPARTMENT
Crust/Punk // Madrid, Spain
Interviewed by Atandistorted
Answeres by Lucky (bass)
7 August 2020

1. Hi Depopulation Department. How are you?
Hi Atandistorted… we are fine, having a summer holiday these days and trying to avoid the pandemic we all are suffering. We really hope that you and your readers are also feeling good.

2. When and how is the band started?
The band has been started in mid 2017 and it happened because we all know each other for a long time, more than 30 years, some of us had been playing together in former bands and wanted to do it again but playing a different style. We have played Grindgore, Death Metal and Hardcore and it is time to go back to an important part of our common roots so we decided to start a Crust/Punk band.

Firstly we recorded a few songs in order to look for a label that would be interested in our music and got several offers, but the very first ones in showing interest were the Italian guys from SPIKEROT RECORDS. They are a young label, original, and noticed that they are doing a good job. We also started this new project and were convinced that it would be good for both parts so we reached and agreement to release our first EP “Life Kills” and our debut album.

3. Who is in the band right now?
Nowadays we are the original band, formed by Ana (Guitar / Vocals) & Luisma (Guitar / Vocal) the two of them also members of Gore Grinders HAEMORRHAGE, Jose (Drums), ex-original member of HAEMORRHAGE and ex-ULTIMO GOBIERNO and Lucky (Bass), ex-original member of AVULSED.

4. Please describe your music and sound?
We really don’t mind labels. Punk, Crust, Hardcore, call it whatever… we are generally described as raw, loud and uncompromissed Crust / Punk with D-beat touches. Be aware of our new songs because they are even quicker and forceful. In advance you can listen to “Condemned To Extinction” which video was released a few months ago and spread like wildfire in social media… then you can judge our style by yourself.

5. List the bands that influence you?
About our influences I can tell you that they are very wide and varied, mainly we listen to Death, Grind, Thrash, Heavy Metal… but the biggest influences for the band come generally from the big classics of punk/crust/D-Beat of the 80s. We listen to bands as diverse as DOOM, SKITSYSTEM, TRAGEDY, ROTTEN SOUND, TERRORIZER, NAPALM DEATH, DISFEAR, ENTOMBED, G.B.H., THE HELLACOPTERS, R.I.P., NECRONY, WOLFBRIGADE, NASUM, SACRILEGE, WARWOUND, NAUSEA, THE EXPLOITED, DISCHARGE, JUDAS PRIEST, ANTHRAX, CONFLICT, BAD RELIGION, ALPINIST, MISFIST, ANTI-CIMEX, EXTREME NOISE TERROR, TORSÖ, URSUT, MARTYRDÖD, DEAD KENNEDYS, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, THE VARUKERS, FREDAG DEN 13:E, WARCOLLAPSE…

6. What were written in the lyrics?
Luisma is the one who write the lyrics. Each one of us were/is involved mostly in Grind and Death Metal bands so we used to sing about gore, monsters, demons and so on. With Depopulation Department we just wanted to express our feelings towards the sick world we live in, songs talk about the life itself, how human being is obssessed with their self destruction and the destruction of any other especie we consider inferior to us, about how the powerful control our lives, unjustness against the wicker ones… in short, condem all we don’t agree with. We are against everything!!

7. Tell us futher about your releases?
By now we have released our debut EP “Life Kills” in CD format, with 7 songs, supported by three video clips, of the songs “Sota”, “Wounds Of War” and the one who titles the EP “Life Kills”,  all of them can be seen through our official pages in social media or YouTube. The CD can be bought through ourselves or through SPIKEROT RECORDS or if you prefer through the main digital platforms.

8. How often do you play gigs?
We have not hit the stage with Depopulation Department already. To be honest we had not enough songs to make a proper show nor wanted to play a few songs and then play a thousand covers, now that we have a huge amount of songs to play due to the pandemic we had to delay it. We have been receiving offers to play several shows and even some small festival outside but we had to refuse due to this. Hopefully in short everythings gets better with the pandemic and we could star playing live, we all are willing to.

9. What are the plans for the future?
Now we are very busy composing and recording at the same time since we are planning to release several things before the end of the year. First of all, the cassette version of our debut EP debut “Life Kills” through American label BLOOD SCYTHE RECORDS, also a Split LP/Cassette with Philippine based in Dubai Crustcore band, CRITICOS DE LA MUERTE, to be released with the same american label. And a bit later a new EP expected to be released in 7" and CD format through Spanish label HECATOMBE RECORDS, and finally if the pandemic allow us we would like to record our debut album that we’ll be released again through Italian label SPIKREROT RECORDS.

10. Say something for the last?
Only thank you for the interview and for all the support through your fanzine Reveal. Thank you also to all who read this interview and ask them to spend a few time listening to our music. We hope to see you all soon in stage.

Interview: TSUBO (Italy)

Interviewed by: Atandistorted (May 7th, 2020)
Answered by: Aristodemo (drummer) & Valentino (singer)
Contributed to: Fast As Fuck zine issue #2

(1) Brief us the band history & current line-up? What does the name TSUBO stand for?
Aristodemo: The band was born around 2003 but really started with a stable line up in 2005, putting out the first self released Demo. The name derives from the pressure points of Chinese medicine which are placed on the body on energy lines. The name, however, was taken from the cartoon Ken the warrior who precisely hit certain pressure points and literally blew up opponents… those points are TSUBO!

(2) Psychotic Adrenalinic Grind. What is your base in defining your music and sound?
Aristodemo: There is no specific basis, the term Psychotic Adrenalinic Grind was born kinda casually. We play an angry, furious and fast music that puts us adrenaline and makes us shake like crazy. It comes from the fusion of many things we listen to and has evolved a little over the years even if it  maintains the standard that sets old school grindcore apart. Songs most of the time short, fast, specific lyrics and tight rhythms that sweep you away!

(3) How do you see the band progress both musical (compositions & recordings) and live performances since the early years until now?
Aristodemo: As I said above, on a compositional level, there have been some changes in the life of the TSUBO, due a little to the line-up changes and a little to the stylistic maturity of each of us. For example, before in some parts there is more DEATH METAL now maybe there is, in the broad sense of the term, some more PROGRESSIVE… but the original matrix remains of the healthy and old IMPACT GRID CORE with some staff madness to make everything less monothematic! Live shows are always fun and we are always happy to do them, there are no better or worse, of course some situations or audience are favorable or not but in essence when you go on stage we just think to DESTROY EVERYTHING, HAVE FUN, Give a message!

(4) What are the best (or your personal favourite to say the least) releases from TSUBO so far?
Aristodemo: Personally the album called “Con Cognizione di Causa” is the most complete. Even if the 2005 demo is a blast… maybe it depends from the recording in direct!

(5) Tell us more about your latest recordings and next releases / future plans?
Aristodemo: Future plans were decided, many tracks just to end and change in better before the recording sessions… but our old bass player Manuel decided to quit everything and this had been disappointed. Then we’ve found a new one, Marco. He’s a great guy and musician, so we decided it was time to make some live shows to restart with him. Now with this goddamn quarantine due to Covid-19 we’re forced to stop everything and wait. We hope to record all the new songs at the end of 2020 and put out a new album as soon as we can!

(6) What have been shouted from your lyrics?
Valentino: Our lyrics are written by me and the drummer Aristodemo. They talk about both inner issues / introspective stuff and social struggle / the insane world we live in. I personally have an hardcore punk approach, so I love to think that grind is protest and resistence ,it’s  something that allows me to share an independent message, far from profit and success logics.

(7) Your opinions about nowadays’ grindcore scene worldwide and your pick for new grind bands?
Valentino: Grindcore today is still something interesting and a good network of friends despite everything. During the last 2 decades we had a bunch of rotten-sound-like bands and this is not always cool for me, because I see a loss of ideas and proposals. Grind at the beginning was something totally unpredictable and aggressive, now you see many many bands with nothing to say. It’s ok having fun with music, but I think we could never forget what this means and our roots. Many grindcore gigs are just discoparties with a different music, is this what we really want? How’s the situation evolving? We have to admit that time has passed and today this music has lost the extreme impact of the past and many people without any awareness are playing grindcore just simply to go on tour, playing the part and feeling important for some fuckers. Cool bands (Grind and PV) that I like and maybe you’ll find interesting are Hello Bastards, Farsas, Nak'ay, Pizza Hi-Five, Nashgul, Warning Fog, Shitstorm Trooper, Expurgo… Shitstorm Trooper.

(8) Thanks for your time. Last words?
First of all we want to thank you Atan for this interview and your great patience waiting our answers!!! Then we want to say thanks to all our friends around the world, we hope to see you soon on the stage after the global fucking quarantine!! hugs!
